Toralaydan Island, West Donegal

Acrylic on Linen Canvas
61×45 cm (24″x45″)
Toralaydan Island lies just over half a mile north of An Port on the West Coast of Donegal *near* Glencolmcille. This view from above the main land it looks like a peninsula rather than an island. You get a sense of the massive geological forces that shaped the Irish landscape millions of years ago. With layers of rock being laid down and then gradually pushed up by the shifting tectonic plates of the earth’s crust.
Read more about the island and sea stacks in the region here. According to Griffith Valuation James McGinley “occupied” this island in the 1840s although its clear he did not live on the island as there were no buildings recorded on the island. It had a ratable value of 5 shillings a year.
