The Blue Door, Gola

£150.00

Oil on linen canvas, 30x24cm, unframed

Or is it a green door? I had trouble deciding whether to call this Green Door or Blue Door. A gorgeous wee cottage on Gola Island, off Gweedore, Donegal, Ireland. It took me a while to put my finger on what drew to painting Gola Island again and again. In the end, I decided that it was the seeming absence of the modern world; there are very few cars, telegraph pole, or people here. I love the physical quiet, no noise, except for the wind and the birds. The sense of peace. Ever since I lived in noisy London over two decades ago I have a longing for places where I cannot hear traffic. Here is such a place. Yet, this is not an abandoned island.  Although a lot of the houses have lost their roofs and just walls, many others are well-maintained, painted bright colours and visited in the summer by the families of the island. Someone took the time to paint this door, Not just any colour, like a trade white, but this lovely blue/green. I like that.
